VIVIAN VICTOR HAWKE
100th BIRTHDAY
10 June 2008
Many things have changed since I was born on 10 June 1908 in
Rockhampton in northern Queensland.
For example, in 1908, in Rockhampton, there were:
NO telephones; no electricity; not taps bringing water into the house;
no hot showers; no hot baths, no good beds with good mattresses on
them; no refrigerators; no microwave ovens, no wall-to-wall carpets in
homes; no television, no radio, no computers; no biros; no credit
cards; no modern banks; no cars; no motorbikes; no aeroplanes; no
daily newspaper delivered to my home; no big department stores such as
Woolworths; no big shopping centres such as Robina; and no fast food
outlets such as Red Rooster.
In 1908, in Rockhampton, there were VERY FEW:
People; good roads; large buildings; police officers; hairdressers;
few clothes to buy; and very few shops [except my Dad’s shop].
BUT we did have plenty of sunshine and good fruit including mangoes
and PLENTY of bananas!!!
