. VCA’s Puppetry course on the chopping block
Ben Eltham writes:
The Victorian College of the Arts faces a deeply uncertain future as Melbourne University makes swinging cuts to courses and jobs there.
Earlier this month Crikey’s Luke Buckmaster reported that jobs were slashed, writing:
In its first month the VCAM have let go at least 12 casual professional staff, moved others to...
Burrows quotes
And the Burrows workshop, some quotes; - The job of the artist is to find out what you are able to do. Not what you want to do. What you are good at doing is too familiar to you so you don’t do it. Or, “ The aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because of their simplicity “ Wittgenstein. “The crisis of contemporary performance is that all conventions are broken from the...

Chaos
I enjoy the experience of chaos in the studio when I am working. I also enjoy watching as systems or groups self-organise into a sense of order. As a teacher of dance and improvisation I feel relatively at home and versed in this realm until… yesterday morning and this morning blew my world and understanding away. Admittedly I often explore this area in the comfort of a university or...

“Between a high, solid wall and an egg that breaks against it, I will always stand on the side of the egg.”
Yes, no matter how right the wall may be and how wrong the egg, I will stand with the egg. Someone else will have to decide what is right and what is wrong; perhaps time or history will decide. If there were a novelist who, for whatever reason, wrote works standing with the...

Today
Tidy the house,
Meet the midwife,
Inspect the new house,
Run the dog,
Teach Buzz,
Eat,
Watch dance,
Meet some people.
Watch telly,
Write,
Good to bed.
Now.
Football
I had to watch some dance tonight. Sometimes I feel like the footballer who prefers playing the game than watching.
Improve studies
When starting studies into Improvisation I was pushing off a Classical Ballet background. Coming from this world of line/edge and tableau I became fascinated by the middle ground and 3-Dimensionality. Over 10 years later I feel the urge to move back towards the edge of things. The edge of time, the edge of time, the end of shape.
I have to develop ‘a falling into flying’ workshop I...

VIVIAN VICTOR HAWKE
100th BIRTHDAY
10 June 2008
Many things have changed since I was born on 10 June 1908 in
Rockhampton in northern Queensland.
For example, in 1908, in Rockhampton, there were:
NO telephones; no electricity; not taps bringing water into the house;
no hot showers; no hot baths, no good beds with good mattresses on
them; no refrigerators; no microwave ovens, no...

Real Time Choreography.
Foreseen or not foreseen. David Corbet and myself coined the above term whilst working on “Excavate - A two man dig”. In a way it was a way to describe our working modality and distance ourselves from the ubiquitous term ‘improvisation’. Today I find myself digging deeper into the word improvisation and find the etymological meaning refreshing....
improvisation
1786, “act of improvising musically,” from Fr. improvisation, from improviser “compose or say extemporaneously,” from It. improvvisare, from improvviso “unforeseen, unprepared,” from L. improvisus, from in- “not” + provisus “foreseen,” also “provided,” pp. of providere “foresee, provide.” Improvise...

The Pitch
He approaches the mound. It is a big soft brown mound responsive underfoot. He is nervous, it is obvious he is nervous. He can’t keep it together he hesitates. Oh no! The crowd are on their feet they realise he has no idea of what he is doing. Will he pull it off? He winds up. He hasn’t settled. It is not looking good. He lets loose and, he’s stuffed it. Totally stuffed it. The...
Adaptation
A snap poll taken today in a 2nd year tertiary educational institute revealed that 7 out of the 20 students could touch type. However 14 out of 20 can text on their mobile phones without looking. “I can text and talk to my friends at the same time” One of the students revealed. Almost all admitted to using this method whilst driving. The real question here is can they text on two...

The heart + lies in a hammock. It likes it there, it is comfy. It is also safe when the storm breaks. The hammock itself just is. Hanging from 2 points, it hangs. It swings when there is a swell, It also rocks the heart.
Contact Improvisation
We do this thing called contact. nobody really knows what it is. but we do it anyway. They say its fun, accessible to say the least. Primarily a physical form it is seen through many windows of spirituality, emotion, sexuality and any other polar creating word. Being harsh. One of the first university created dance forms. Why do I do it? Dunno really. It’s just something I do.
